ABC7 Chicago is now streaming 24/7. Click here to watch On Friday morning, Terrell Brown joined fellow ABC7 employees and Disney VoluntEARS at the Greater Chicago Food Depository to help pack food boxes for neighbors in need. Dozens of volunteers spent the morning sorting and packing nutritious food for seniors throughout the community. For volunteer Zyana Cabrera, giving back was an easy decision. "I feel good. I feel like I woke up early on a Friday and did something that meant something to the community," Cabrera said. "I can go about my day feeling like I put some good energy out." The effort comes as food insecurity continues to rise across the Chicago area. According to the Food Depository, one in three households is experiencing food insecurity. Among households with children, that number rises to one in two. Camerin Mattson, communications manager for the Food Depository, called the trend "devastating" for children and families struggling to put food on the table. Mattson said volunteer support helps make food distribution possible across the region. "We are so grateful to our volunteers. They are the lifeblood of what we do," Mattson said. Friday's volunteer shift resulted in 918 food boxes being packed, totaling 23,868 pounds of food headed to people in need throughout the community. For volunteer Daniel De la Cruz, helping fight hunger starts with showing up. "It's one thing to know it's happening, and it's another thing to ignore it," he said. "Coming out here and pitching in is really cool." ABC7's Feed the Love campaign supports the Greater Chicago Food Depository, Northern Illinois Food Bank and Food Bank of Northwest Indiana. Every dollar donated helps provide just over two meals for families facing hunger. The Walt Disney Company is the parent company of this ABC station.
